The Gujaratis: A Portrait of a Community
Gujaratis are an uncommonly industrious and resourceful people. In India alone, there are some 55 million people who consider Gujarati to be their mother tongue, and possibly 6 million more of them abroad, on every continent, if not in every country. They are known for their entrepreneurial spirit, and their love of business and the profitable deal. After all, paiso bole chhe-money talks. No wonder then, that some of India’s greatest industrial houses-Tata, Reliance, Wipro, and scores of others-owe their existence to brilliant Gujarati businessmen. Beyond business, Gujaratis have made their mark in politics (Mahatma Gandhi was Gujarati as was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel; there have also been two Gujarati prime ministers, Morarji Desai and Narendra Modi- three, if Rajiv Gandhi, whose father was Gujarati, is counted), science, culture, cricket, and many other fields of endeavour. Some of them have also become notorious as conmen, swindlers, and rioters-Gujarat ranks high among states in which communal riots have taken place. Gujaratis are renowned for their delicious vegetarian snacks (often mispronounced as ‘snakes’), stringent dietary restrictions, and love for the garba, natak nights, and sugam sangeet.

Belonging: A Journey of Love
A SURPRISING, RICHLY TOLD MEMOIR THAT SEAMLESSLY WEAVES THE PERSONAL WITH THE POLITICAL TO TELL A RIVETING STORY: OF LOVE, OF FAMILY, AND OF AN ENDLESSLY FASCINATING COUNTRY, INDIA.
How did a girl from a small village in Italy rise as a politician in India and become known around the world?
Belonging begins in Cambridge, England, where in 1965 Sonia Maino, a nineteen-year-old student, falls in love at first sight with the handsome, dark-eyed young man she’s destined to marry: Rajiv Gandhi, grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, independent India’s first Prime Minister.
In this book, the once famously reticent Sonia Gandhi opens up with warmth and candour to tell the story of her remarkable life, from her childhood in post-war Veneto; to the romance that brings her to India; to the shattering losses that will reshape not only her own future but also that of her adopted home.
We witness Sonia’s introduction to her formidable mother-in-law, Nehru’s daughter Indira Gandhi, India’s first female Prime Minister. We see Sonia gain confidence by Rajiv’s side, as she adjusts to the sounds and sights of her new home – learning to speak Hindi, to wear saris, to relish spicy cuisine.
Rajiv Gandhi begins work as a commercial airline pilot, and they raise their two children in the Prime Minister’s house in Delhi. But everything changes when Rajiv’s brother, Sanjay, also a pilot, is killed in a crash, and when, in 1984, Indira Gandhi is brutally assassinated by her security guards in the garden of her home. In the wake of his mother’s death, and despite Sonia’s fears, Rajiv steps into the role of Prime Minister. The couple travel across India and the world. Then, through Sonia’s wrenching retelling, we feel the full force of the tragedy when seven years later Rajiv, too, is assassinated, by a suicide bomber while on the campaign trail.
Brushing aside the advice of her Italian family to return, Sonia heeds the call within her to stay in India. She is drawn into politics, becoming the longest-serving president of the Indian National Congress. We see how, though once regarded as a foreign-born outsider, she comes to earn the trust and affection of millions. Yet when after a key election, the Congress Party selects her to become Prime Minister, she makes a rare decision – declining her country’s highest office, choosing instead to lead her Party in an alliance that will govern India for a decade.
This dramatic account, at once epic and intimate, gives readers a unique lens on India – its tumultuous post-independence history and its present political struggles – offering an insider’s keen perspective on the country’s enormous political, economic and social changes over fifty years. Movingly, the book goes behind the scenes of a renowned political family. Most revelatory of all is the portrait of Sonia herself as she invites readers into her private joys and travails, as well as the people and events that shaped her. In a voice at once perceptive and modest, she shares her insights into identity, duty, and the meaning of home. Belonging is at heart one courageous woman’s story of falling in love with a man and a country, of finding the strength to remake her life and to serve India, the place where she belongs.

1962: The War That Wasn’t
Shiv Kunal Verma’s book ‘1962: The War That Wasn’t’ is an unrivalled attempt at unravelling the mystery that surrounds India’s most shameful defeat at the hands of the People’s Liberation Army of China. This was a conflict between India and China across India’s Himalayan frontiers in the north and the East. It was a conflict that was never formally declared and several accounts have been written dedicated to this matter; however, none is as deterrent as the account given by Shiv Kunal Verma. He talks of the plight of the Indian solders across the northern border, all the way from Nam ka Chu in the eastern sector to Ladakh on the Western front. He talks about the horror that would have happened had the Chinese army not decided unilaterally to cease fire and stop its vicious campaign on the Indian soil. This was a conflict that saw massacre on both lands injuring over four thousand soldiers.
The book is based on several accounts from soldiers who were present in the line of fire and were able enough to give a vivid first person account on what actually took place in that unfortunate year of 1962. ‘1962: The War That Wasn’t’ is an account of India’s horrific escape from disaster in young Independent existence. The book is un-nerving to the extent of sending chills down your spine by citing riveting intricacies of shocking developments. The book is a result of over two decades worth of research and interviews by the author. He personally sat down with officers and soldiers from the war. The book features a deep analysis on India’s border issues with China at the time.

Arguments with Gandhi
In Arguments with Gandhi, Ramachandra Guha uses the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi to present a moral and political history of the modern world.
The Gandhi of this book is a compelling as well as controversial figure, whose ideas on non-violence, social justice, religious harmony and economic policy have elicited a wide range of responses, affirmative as well as critical. As Guha demonstrates, Gandhi’s debates with his contemporaries, and the arguments of later generations with him, foreground some of the vital questions of human existence that we still confront:
How do we best resist political tyranny? How do we mitigate discrimination on the basis of caste, gender and race? And how do we achieve freedom from poverty and deprivation without destroying the planet?
With Gandhi as its pivot, this book features an array of major historical figures who engaged with his ideas, among them B.R. Ambedkar, Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr., Lenin, Nelson Mandela, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and V.D. Savarkar.
Rigorously researched and elegantly written, Arguments with Gandhi is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding Gandhi’s legacy in the context of the challenges the world faces today.

BORN A MUSLIM: Some Truths About Islam in India
Who are the Indian Muslims? Are they a monolithic community practising a faith alien to India? Or are they a diverse people, geographically rooted in the cultural ethos of the land? Is there an ‘Indian Islam’, a religion that grew out of Arabia but was nurtured in India and influenced by local traditions and customs? Has the power of Islam declined over the centuries because the faithful have forgotten the spirit of the religion, and are sticking to dogma and rigid rules instead? Born a Muslim: some truths about Islam in India attempts to answer these questions by taking a hard look at how the world’s second largest religion is practised in the country. The book tracks the history of the religion from its revelation in Arabia in the seventh century to its spread through many parts of the world. It arrived in India by multiple routes—in the South, in the eighth and ninth centuries CE, with traders from Arabia, and in the North, in the tenth and eleventh centuries, with invaders, rulers, and mystics, largely from central Asia. Once it was established in India, It morphed and evolved through the centuries until it took on the distinctive contours of the religion that is practised here at present. The author takes a clear-eyed look at every aspect of Islam in India today. She examines the factors that have stalled the socio-economic and intellectual growth of Indian Muslims and attributes both internal factors—such as a disproportionate reliance on the ulema—as well as external ones that have contributed to the backwardness of the community. She shows at length, and with great empathy and understanding, what it is like to live as a Muslim in India and provides suggestions on how their lot might be improved. Weaving together personal memoir, history, reportage, scholarship, and interviews with a wide variety of people, the author highlights how an apathetic and sometimes hostile government attitude and prejudice at all levels of society have contributed to Muslim vulnerability and insecurity. Born a Muslim goes beyond stereotypes and news headlines to present an extraordinarily compelling and illuminating portrait of one of the largest and most diverse communities in India.

RESTLESS AS MERCURY: My Life As a Young Man Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
M. K. Gandhi’s autobiography, the story of My experiments with truth, is famously incomplete, stopping abruptly in 1920. But while he gave up writing his memoirs, Gandhi continued to speak and write about his life, family, work, colleagues, those who opposed and Venerated him, his hopes, anxieties, challenges, fasts, many jail stints, his Enthusiasms, and disappointments. When knitted together, these autobiographical observations, scattered over several pages of the collected works of Mahatma Gandhi, as well as in some works that were published in his lifetime under his gaze, make for a gripping and powerful story. ‘Restless as Mercury’, is how his only sister, raliyat, described the young Mohandas and her stunningly accurate characterization of her brother provides the title of this work, which Gopalkrishna Gandhi has reconstructed from Gandhian own words. The account is divided into six sections: book I starts with Gandhi’s birth in 1869 and focuses on his early years in Gujarat, his schooling, immediate family, and marriage to Kasturba. In book II, we see him away from his home and family in a new environment—england—where he goes to study law. He continues his commitment to vegetarianism and engages in a brief flirtation with becoming an English gentleman. He then makes a quick visit home to Rajkot before going to South Africa to practise law. There, he experiences racial prejudice and struggles to balance the demands of home and public life. In book III, we see Gandhi being drawn into two Wars in South Africa—The anglo–boer war (1899–1902) and the bambatha rebellion (1906). he sets up the ambulance Corps with other Indians, becomes politically engaged, and starts fighting for the rights of Indians in South Africa. It is during this period that he starts his journal, Indian opinion, and his first ashram in durban—the Phoenix settlement. As his ethics and values firm up, he finds himself in a battle at home with his wife, Kasturba. In book IV, as Gandhian politics come under assault by all three major sections of South African population—the ruling European, the majority African, and the minority asian—his belief in non-violent struggle becomes stronger and his idea of satyagraha comes to the fore. He begins courting imprisonment and encourages his friends, family, and fellow Indians to do so as well. In book V we see that his deep and constantly renewed bonds with the family have to reckon with his commitment to the larger cause. It is in this period that Gandhi sets up Tolstoy farm for the families of the satyagrahis. Book VI sees him leading disciplined mass movements the likes of which have not been seen before. When all the demands of the South African satyagraha are conceded, Gandhi decides the time has come for him to return to India. Accompanied by Kasturba, he leaves South Africa for India in 1914 for the great appointment with history that awaits him in the motherland. Restless as Mercury is a candid and unflinching account of the struggles, experiences, and philosophies that informed and influenced the young Mohandas. It also shows how Gandhi kept, not without Stumbling, his love of family in step with his sense of his public duties.

The Code Breaker
In 2012, Nobel Prize winning scientist Jennifer Doudna hit upon an invention that will transform the future of the human race: an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA.
Known as CRISPR, it opened a brave new world of medical miracles and moral questions. It has already been deployed to cure deadly diseases, fight the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, and make inheritable changes in the genes of babies.
But what does that mean for humanity? Should we be hacking our own DNA to make us less susceptible to disease? Should we democratise the technology that would allow parents to enhance their kids?
After discovering this CRISPR, Doudna is now wrestling these even bigger issues.
The Code Breaker is an examination of how life as we know it is about to change – and a brilliant portrayal of the woman leading the way.

WHY I AM A HINDU
In Why I Am a Hindu, one of India’s finest public intellectuals gives us a profound book about one of the world’s oldest and greatest religions. Starting with a close examination of his own belief in Hinduism, he ranges far and wide in his study of the faith. He talks about the Great Souls of Hinduism, Adi Shankara, Patanjali, Ramanuja, Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and many others who made major contributions to the essence of Hinduism. He delves deep into Hinduism’s most important schools of thought (such as the Advaita Vedanta). He explains, in easily accessible language, important aspects and concepts of Hindu philosophy like the Purusharthas and Bhakti, masterfully summarizes the lessons of the Gita and Vivekananda’s ecumenism and explores with sympathy the ‘Hinduism of habit’ practised by ordinary believers. He looks at the myriad manifestations of political Hinduism in the modern era, including violence committed in the name of the faith by right-wing organizations and their adherents. He analyses Hindutva, explains its rise and dwells at length on the philosophy of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, its most significant ideologue. He is unsparing in his criticism of extremist ‘bhakts’ and unequivocal in his belief that everything that makes India a great and distinctive culture and country will be imperilled if religious ‘fundamentalists’ are allowed to take the upper hand. However, he also makes the point that it is precisely because Hindus form the majority that India has survived as a plural, secular democracy.

An Era of Darkness
In 1930, the American historian and philosopher Will Durant wrote that Britain’s ‘conscious and deliberate bleeding of India… [was the] greatest crime in all history’. He was not the only one to denounce the rapacity and cruelty of British rule, and his assessment was not exaggerated. Almost thirty-five million Indians died because of acts of commission and omission by the British—in famines, epidemics, communal riots and wholesale slaughter like the reprisal killings after the 1857 War of Independence and the Amritsar massacre of 1919. Besides the deaths of Indians, British rule impoverished India in a manner that beggars belief. When the East India Company took control of the country, in the chaos that ensued after the collapse of the Mughal empire, India’s share of world GDP was 23 per cent. When the British left it was just above 3 per cent. The British empire in India began with the East India Company, incorporated in 1600, by royal charter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I, to trade in silk, spices and other profitable Indian commodities. Within a century and a half, the Company had become a power to reckon with in India. In 1757, under the command of Robert Clive, Company forces defeated the ruling Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula of Bengal at Plassey, through a combination of superior artillery and even more superior chicanery. A few years later, the young and weakened Mughal emperor, Shah Alam II, was browbeaten into issuing an edict that replaced his own revenue officials with the Company’s representatives. Over the next several decades, the East India Company, backed by the British government, extended its control over most of India, ruling with a combination of extortion, double-dealing, and outright corruption backed by violence and superior force. This state of affairs continued until 1857, when large numbers of the Company’s Indian soldiers spearheaded the first major rebellion against colonial rule. After the rebels were defeated, the British Crown took over power and ruled the country ostensibly more benignly until 1947, when India won independence. In this explosive book, bestselling author Shashi Tharoor reveals with acuity, impeccable research, and trademark wit, just how disastrous British rule was for India. Besides examining the many ways in which the colonizers exploited India, ranging from the drain of national resources to Britain, the destruction of the Indian textile, steel-making and shipping industries, and the negative transformation of agriculture, he demolishes the arguments of Western and Indian apologists for Empire on the supposed benefits of British rule, including democracy and political freedom, the rule of law, and the railways. The few unarguable benefits—the English language, tea, and cricket—were never actually intended for the benefit of the colonized but introduced to serve the interests of the colonizers. Brilliantly narrated and passionately argued, An Era of Darkness will serve to correct many misconceptions about one of the most contested periods of Indian history.

The Ultimate Goal
In The Ultimate Goal, Vikram Sood, former chief of India’s external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), explains ‘the narrative’ and how a country’s ability to construct, sustain and control narratives, at home and abroad, enhances its strength and position. Intelligence agencies invariably play a critical role in this, an often-indispensable tool of statecraft.
A ‘narrative’ may not necessarily be based on truth, but it does need to be plausible, have a meaning and create a desired perception. During most of the twentieth century, intelligence agencies helped shape narratives favourable to their countries’ agendas through literature, history, drama, art, music and cinema. Today, social media has become crucial to manipulating, countering or disrupting narratives, with its ability to spread fake news disinformation, and provoke reactions.
