The novel traces the life path of Mani, who is catapulted into his father’s profession after a tragedy in their lives. He takes over the mantle of the village Velichappadu. Mani is forced to quell his own aspirations and desires. His adoration for Premila remains a silent song within his heart. Mani marries Meenakshi, but she finds it almost impossible to reconcile her feelings for her husband and his role as the Velichappadu as the Devi takes over his person when he goes into trance. As events unfold over the years, Premila and Meenakshi meet for a brief but significant moment and the latter’s envy and apprehension disappear. Meanwhile, Mani realises that he is growing older and unable to carry on as the Velichappadu. A new Velichappadu appears in an unexpected manner, proving that the Bhagavathy has, once again, blessed the village.
